Bruins remember Cam Stewart

Uxbridge Bruins fans observed a minute of silent reflection at the arena last Friday in remembrance of former club president Cam Stewart, who passed away last year.
As Cam's widow, Alice, stood on the ice, supported by vice-president Terry Sovie, himself recovering from injuries received in a traffic accident several weeks ago, former Bruins director and long-time announcer Brian Evans eulogized the late president.
"Cam Stewart and the Uxbridge Bruins Hockey Club were synonymous with each other for over 25 years," Evans told the crowd. "Cam deserved and received respect from each and every relationship in the East Orr Division as well as throughout the PJHL."
However, Evans said, Cam was not just a part of the Bruins.
"Beyond the Uxbridge Bruins, Cam loved to get to work with his peers across the league to grow Junior Hockey in Ontario. He will be remembered as someone who was always willing to lend a hand, offer a kind word and make meaningful connections everywhere he went."
Evans noted that Cam was also involved in the community, in farming and in his church. Cam passed away on June 4 surrounded by his wife of 55 years and his family.
In honour and memory of Cam, the team has been wearing his initials on their helmets throughout this season.
Following the moment of silence, Alice dropped the ceremonial puck for the start of the Bruins' game against the Schomberg Cougars.
The game itself did not go well for the Bruins. The Cougars scored the only goal of the first period late in the stanza.
The Bruins then scored the only goal of the second period, with Jack Kemp assisted on the power play by Evan Gilbert and Colin Glecoff.
The third period, however, was all Schomberg as they scored a power-play marker, a regular strength goal and an empty netter to take the game 4-1.
The loss dropped Uxbridge back into fifth place in the seven-team league with 33 points, two less than the Port Perry Lumberjacks, but with a game in hand. The team heads to Schomberg tonight (Thursday) for a return match and then hosts the powerful, league-leading Clarington Eagles at the arena tomorrow at 7:45 p.m. They are scheduled to face the Eagles again in Clarington next Tuesday.
