‘Maud’ fans gearing up for a celebratory summer

Submitted by Melanie Whitfield, LMMSO

The launch events for the 150th anniversary celebration of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s birthday are just a couple of weeks away. Behind the scenes a lot of work is being done to connect the businesses/residents of the Township of Uxbridge to the world-renowned author who, over 100 years ago, made this place her home. Businesses are coming up with creative ways to partner and choose a “Nod to Maud” item for their spaces.

For example, Lisa Hutchinson from the Passionate Cook’s Essentials has chosen lemon squares from Aunt Maud’s Recipe Book to feature in her store. Norine Graham-Robinson of the Quilter’s Cupboard has ordered Anne of Green Gables-themed quilting material for her patrons. Norine Blyth and Karen Ryl of the Uxbridge Trails are choosing quotes from Montgomery’s poetry to post on the trails at the Countryside Preserve. And Patty Ewaschuck from Banjo Cider has a Maud-inspired cider that features an infusion of raspberry to connect to the raspberry cordial in Anne of Green Gables.

This is just a sample of some of the partnership ideas out there. All partners will be posted on the LMMSO website in the near future, and new partners and ideas are welcome at any time throughout this year by calling 705-228-8155.

On Friday, May 17, the Globe and Mail included our Nod to Maud event poster in their Explore Ontario section. Thanks to Cheryl Hinzel of Red Hot Design for creating this wonderful graphic!

Save the date of Sunday, July 21, on your calendar. Uxbridge Township will be celebrating Montgomery at a “Downtown Summer Social” all along Brock St. with events for the whole family. More details to follow!

On May 29, the first of two launch events will take place. Blue Heron Books and the Book Drunkard Festival are featuring a Carley Fortune book event with Mary Berg at the Music Hall, which is nearly sold out. Proof of attendance at this event gets you $5 off at the door of the special performance of “Maud of Leaskdale,” which takes place on the next evening, May 30, at the Historic Leaskdale Church.

“In this one woman show performed by Jennifer Carroll, experience the life of Lucy Maud Montgomery through her own powerful words.”

The request the LMMSO has for you is to come and see the play and get to know this special author. Make this your “Nod to Maud.” Go to starticketing.ca or find the link at lucymaudmontgomery.ca
