Optimists propose new sport venue

The Optimist Club of Uxbridge appeared before council to pitch a proposal for a new sports venue in town using existing facilities.

The Optimists asked council to support the idea of establishing a disc golf course on township property, naming Quaker Common and the Fields of Uxbridge as preferred locations. They said creating a disc golf course would involve setting up nine or 18 stations or "holes," basket-like targets set on poles that players attempt to put their "Frisbees" in with as few attempts as possible, much like golf. It can be played year-round and, with glow-in-the-dark discs, can even be played at night.

The presentation said there are 5,000 such courses across North America and there would be no fee for players using the course. They said the course would be integrated into existing park systems with no impact on organized sport fields, playgrounds or residences.

Council asked staff to examine the proposal and come back with a report.
