Around a campfire at the end of August, members of the 1st Uxbridge Scout Group and their guests gathered to present two “top section awards” for Scouting.

Scout Qian Dubeau earned her Chief Scout’s Award, and Venturer James Marlatt earned his King’s Venturer Award, after completing 18 or 24 outdoor adventure skills, 30 or 60 hours of community service, and the completion of a capstone project to benefit the community.

The Chief Scout’s Award and King’s Venturer Award are, according to Craig Marlatt, Group Commissioner, notable items on youth resumés and will “likely open doors otherwise unavailable as post-secondary institutions and employers are made aware of the exceptional caliber of the applicants in front of them.”

Over the past four years, Dubeau developed her skills in many different areas. She has completed the following during her time in the Scout troop: 16 environmental projects; 31 Outdoor Adventure skill levels; 100 community service hours; 61 nights out camping; 101 Linking events; and 100 hours of hiking.

Over the past three years, James has continued to develop his skills as well. Individually, he has completed the following during his time in the Venturer Company: 10 environmental projects; 37 Outdoor Adventure skill levels; 122 community service hours; 88 nights out camping; 96 Linking events; and 90 hours of hiking.

Both youth received a certificate signed by the Chief Scout of Canada, as well as wall plaques, and they also received a crest for the Venturer or Rover uniform.
