Uxbridge street one of worst in province

The Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) bestowed a somewhat dubious honour on Uxbridge on Tuesday when it released its annual Worst Road list for 2024 - Cedar Street North landed at number seven in Ontario.

According to the CAA, it compiles the annual list to help “influence change for Ontario's roads.” It says it invites Ontario drivers, cyclists, transit riders and pedestrians to vote in the CAA Worst Roads campaign and tell them which roads need improvement.

“Over the years, we have heard about potholes, congestion, poor road signs and other safety concerns. Voting for Ontario's Worst Roads helps shine the spotlight on where more work is needed. Your feedback helps us continue the dialogue with multiple levels of government to help pave the way for safer roads across Ontario.”

On Facebook, reaction to the list was quick to argue that Cedar St. N. was not the worst street in the township, and that others were more deserving of being called out. On the “Complaining in Uxbridge Township” page, one comment said that Reg. Rd. 1, heading towards Leaskdale was “brutal,” and another said that Hwy. 47 between Goodwood and the York-Durham Townline should have been on the list as well.

Aberdeen Avenue in Hamilton was at the top of Ontario’s 10 Worst Roads. The CAA also broke the province down by region, and put Halton, Peel, York and Durham together, compiling a top five - Cedar St. N. was number two, and Maple Street was number 3.

The CAA has been hosting the annual Worst Roads campaign since 2003. Uxbridge has not been in the number one spot.
