Concert band promising a summertime musical adventure

The Uxbridge Community Concert Band has been practicing all summer, and is ready to present listeners with a musical adventure.

Every summer, musicians of all ages and experience levels gather to prepare an August concert, usually based on a theme selected by the previous year’s members. This year’s concert is centered on the concept of the hero’s quest, drawn from the selection of the epic sounds of The Lord of the Rings, which was presented by the 2023 band.

To accompany this journey to Mount Doom, band director Steffan Brunette has added pieces that tell all sorts of adventure stories. There will be movie music, including classics like Lawrence of Arabia, and 21st century tales such as How to Train Your Dragon.

Video games will be represented too. Themes from “Assassin’s Creed” and “Skyrim,” as well as the uplifting prayer “Baba Yetu” from the game “Civilization” will be featured.

Journey by sea makes an appearance too, with a dramatic depiction of Odysseus’s attempt to avoid the deadly Sirens as he sails home from the Trojan war. Band member and Markham resident Sean Breen has contributed an original work to the program as well, with a piece entitled “Along the Waterfront.”

The UCCB celebrates the conclusion of its 29th summer season on Saturday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m., at Hope Church in Port Perry. Tickets will be sold at the door. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for students and seniors, with children 12 & under admitted free.
