Council delays minor safety project

In a report to council on Monday, Kyle Brennan of the public works department said a safety study had been conducted on a 400-metre section of Concession 3 in Goodwood to identify any potential safety issues.
His report concluded that although the roadway itself was in good condition, it recommended that temporary radar-speed boards be installed in the area and dragon's teeth road markings be put in place to encourage motorists to slow down. Brennan described the project as "a small scope of work," adding there would not be a significant cost.
However, Mayor Dave Barton said the proposed changes need to be looked at in the context of the township's overall approach to traffic calming and proposed that the item be referred back to staff.
"We get a significant amount of complaints from one or two individuals on that stretch of road," he said. "We know the squeaky wheel gets the grease but that's not how we operate."
Councillor Willie Popp said delaying the project would not be a case of "kicking this down the road" because nothing can be done until next year anyway.
Council voted in favour of Barton's motion to refer the report and its recommendations back to staff.
