During the announcements at the beginning of Monday’s council meeting, regional councillor Bruce Garrod pointed out that Feb. 11 was National 211 Day.

Garrod said most residents know about such numbers as 911 for emergencies and 311 for non-emergency services in Durham Region, but said few people know about 211. He then explained that 211 is a free, confidential service that provides everyone in Canada with easy access to information about essential government and community services.

By dialing 211, people are connected to a trained resource navigator who can offer information about local supports such as food banks and communal meal programs, income assistance programs, legal resources, counselling services for mental health and addictions, housing options, including emergency shelters, and support for seniors.
