New riding does not yet have full slate

With Canada expected to go to the polls on April 28 to elect the 45th Parliament, voters in Uxbridge should remember they are now part of a large new riding. For the last few elections, local voters were in the Pickering-Uxbridge riding, which was basically an oblong shape running from Pickering's shoreline to the northern boundary of Uxbridge. That has now changed.

Because of riding redistribution in 2022, Uxbridge is now in the new riding of York-Durham, a much larger riding that encompasses the Town of Georgina, the Townships of Brock, Scugog and Uxbridge, the First Nations of Chippewas of Georgina Island and Mississaugas of Scugog Island as well as a part of Whitchurch-Stouffville. Pickering has been placed in the riding of Pickering-Brooklin.

As of press time on Tuesday evening, the known candidates in York-Durham are Jacob Mantle, representing the Conservatives; Rob Grossi, running for the Liberals; Patricia Conlin, carrying the banner for the People's Party of Canada; and Matt Pearce of the Green Party.

Candidates much register by April 7.

Mantle served one term as an Uxbridge councillor in 2010 before leaving to go to law school. He ran unsuccessfully against Jennifer O'Connell in the 2021 federal election.

Grossi served on Georgina council for more than 20 years, 17 as mayor.

Conlin is taking her second run for election. A bio for Pearce has not yet been posted.

Electors in the York-Durham riding can vote at their designated polling place on April 28. The address of your polling place can be found on the voter information card that comes in the mail, or you can check with elections.ca.

Advance voting will take place on April 18, 19, 20 and 21, at any advance polls.

A candidates meeting will be hosted by the Cosmos at the arena community centre on Monday. April 14, starting at 7 p.m.
