Over 50 men’s golf league looking for more over 50s men - to play golf!

Submitted by John Davies

This coming summer will be the 30th year of play for a unique Uxbridge area golf league.

From early May until mid-September, Tuesday mornings at Mill Run Golf Club are the domain of the Mill Run Senior Men’s Golf League. This group enjoys 20 weeks of fun, camaraderie and competition for men over the age of 50.

The Mill Run Senior Men’s Golf League is looking for more members!

This league differs from most others in that it is run by the members themselves, not the golf club. As well, the competition allows for golfers of all levels to be competitive and successful.

In the mid-1990s, a group of older men in a Tuesday night Mill Run league felt they wanted to play in the morning, and they wanted to compete against golfers of a similar age. They approached Mill Run and were rewarded with the option to start a “Senior” league on Tuesday mornings. Thus the Tuesday Morning Mill Run Sr. Men’s Golf League began.

Over a period of a few years of trial and error, their current format of play was developed and refined. It is the key to their success! Simply stated, individual players compete against themselves. Players of vastly different skill levels can play together with that difference having no effect on the results. The organizers of the league keep records of an individual player’s results and each week, every player is assigned a “target” for that week’s play. It is the average of their last five results playing in the league.

The idea is to compare how each player’s results on a particular week compares to this average, and monetary prizes are awarded to the players who perform the best compared to their “target.”

A committee of nine members organize the play each week. The golf club collects fees for playing and any cart rentals. They also support the committee in their efforts. Virtually all the fees collected to join the league are returned to the members in one way or another.

One core philosophy is that players should play with as many different players as possible. To that end, the committee sets up the groupings each week to maximize the opportunity for members to play with as many other members as possible. The league believes this makes for a much more rewarding experience.

In 2024, there was only one remaining “original member” who still competes in this league. That golfer, despite experiencing a decline in golfing abilities, ended the year 2024 in the top 25 per cent of the league and won back the vast majority of his league fees.

Each year, between 100 and 135 players participate in this league, most will tell you that the best part is the opportunity to play with a really great bunch of people and to have some fun. Why not give it a try? Sign up for this league is open now. For more information, either contact the Mill Run pro shop at 905-852-6212 or email
