Rental units proposed for Main Street

The site of the former Martino’s Cabinet Works, on Main St., is being considered for a substantial upgrade that will accommodate the rental market, a bit of accessibility, and some affordable units.

The owners of the building on Main Street which formerly housed Martino's Cabinet Works have applied for a Community Improvement Grant to facilitate turning the property into a six-unit rental property.

A report by Marc Anthony Miller of the planning department said the owner proposes retrofitting the existing building at 54 Main Street South to accommodate the rental dwelling units, one of which will be considered accessible. In addition, the owner proposes improvements to the building’s exterior facade

Miller said the grant would assist the owner in offsetting increased property taxes resulting from the redevelopment and rehabilitation of the site.

Councillor Pam Beach said she was concerned about the use of chemicals at the site over the years by the businesses that have operated there and was told the building department would look into that.

Councillor Willie Popp said he liked the fact the new owner was going to make at least one of the units accessible.

Council voted to support the report’s recommendations.
