Uxbridge public transit: good and getting better

Roger Varley, Local Journalism Initiative Reporter

In a report to council on Monday regarding Durham Regional Transit, regional councillor Bruce Garrod said there have been improvements in transit in Uxbridge since 2022, but there is still a need for continued development.

Garrod noted that transit in the township consists of the 905 route, which connects Uxbridge to Port Perry and the south end of the region, the 605 route, which provides scheduled service within the urban area of Uxbridge proper, and on-demand service. He said on-demand service provides transportation for all residents in the township on a first come-first served basis. He said on-demand customers pay about $4 a ride regardless of the distance travelled. However, the number of vehicles used for on-demand service fluctuates.

Garrod's report said increased use of on-demand service (13,582 riders used on-demand in 2024) can stress service availability but noted additional vehicles and drivers are being brought on-line by DRT in 2025.
